The last stage of formation which prepares a young woman for final profession is the juniorate. She exchanges the white veil of the novice for a black veil of the professed nun. Her cord is knotted, signifying the four vows of obedience, poverty, chastity and, if she is a cloistered nun, enclosure. As a vowed religious she now takes on the chanting of the full Liturgy of the Hours with the sisters in final vows. Sharing more deeply in the life of the community, the junior professed takes on more responsibility and works more closely with the older nuns while continuing classes.

These years prepare the young sister for the fullness of her gift of self to Jesus
Christ in solemn or perpetual profession. Saint Clare calls us to "love Him totally,
who has given Himself totally for you." Though the bridal exchange of first
profession is temporary, the newly professed says "forever" in her heart.
